What Are the 3 Main Purposes of Writing?

What are the 3 main purposes of writing? According to Grenville (2001:1), there are three purposes of writing:

1. to entertain

Writing for fun often takes the form of creative or imaginative writing. In other words, the researcher should use his creative potential. I feel this should not make readers laugh, but rather grab their attention.

2. to inform

The purpose of the newsletter is to tell the reader something. Such newsletters may refer to objects, places, procedures and events that may appear in newspapers and articles, scientific or commercial reports, instructions or procedures, school and university articles.

3. to persuade

The researcher tries to convince the reader of the correctness of his point of view by presenting a fact/data that the reader should follow, accepts the researcher's point of view and acts accordingly.
